New Epson 17 x 22 inch papers headed to dealers
Three new 17 x 22 inch papers from Epson are beginning to ship. A notice to Canadian retailers from Epson Canada indicates that 25-sheet packs of Premium Glossy Photo Paper, Velvet Fine Art Paper and Ultra Premium Photo Paper Luster are available for dealer orders. These papers are designed for use in Epson printers that accept cut sheets of this size, including the Stylus Pro 3800 and Stylus Pro 4800.

Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 to ship February 19
Adobe has announced that Photoshop Lightroom 1.0 for Mac and Windows will ship on February 19, 2007 at an introductory price of US$199. The company's pro photo management and RAW conversion software, which has evolved through a public beta process that resulted in over 500,000 photographers downloading the work-in-progress application, can be pre-ordered now by photographers in the USA, Canada and perhaps elsewhere too.

Camera Raw 3.7 slated for release at same time as Lightroom
Camera Raw 3.7, an update to the RAW processing plug-in for Photoshop CS2 Mac and Windows, is slated for release on February 19. The new version is to coincide with the shipping of Lightroom 1.0 on that day, and will add support for RAW files from the Nikon D40 and Pentax K10D. Plus, it will introduce cross-application compatibility between Lightroom and Photoshop CS2 RAW processing settings stored in a RAW photo's companion sidecar XMP file.

CNET looks at HD Photo format
CNET has published an interesting feature on HD Photo, a compressed image file format developed by Microsoft that offers a number of potential advantages over the ubiquitious JPEG today. HD Photo (known until recently as Windows Media Photo) promises better quality at similar rates of compression than JPEG, supports 16-bits per colour and 32-bits per colour photos and uses internally the ultrawide scRGB to represent image colours.

DxO adds D40, new lens modules to Optics Pro
DxO Labs has added the Nikon D40 and three Nikkor lenses to the list of camera-lens combos supported by v4.1 of its Optics Pro image correction software. In addition to D40 support, the company has added eight DxO Lens Modules for certain other Canon, Nikon and Sony digital SLRs, including the Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L for the Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi/400D and the Nikkor 70-200mm f/2.8G ED-IF AF-S VR for the Nikon D80.

onOne Software has today kicked off a public beta program for the next version of Genuine Fractals, the venerable image resampling plug-in for Photoshop. Genuine Fractals 5.0 for Windows and Mac features promised improvements in both resampling quality and resampling speed and includes new controls for sharpening and adding simulated film grain. The Mac version is a Universal Binary for native performance on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs.

Fujifilm introduces high-speed dye-sub photo printers
Fujifilm has unveiled the ASK-2000 and ASK-4000, two new compact dye-sublimation printers aimed at working photographers who need to print in volume on location. The ASK-2000 can make prints up to 6 x 9 inches in size, and is capable of producing a borderless 5 x 7 inch print in 16 seconds, says a Fujifilm press release. The maximum print size from the ASK-4000 is 8 x 12 inches; Fujifilm claims a print time of 40 seconds for a borderless 8 x 10. At the Macworld Conference and Expo today in San Francisco, Nikon offered a sneak peek at a nearly-completed Universal Binary version of Capture NX running on an Intel-based MacBook Pro. Apple today has announced a major update to its Airport Extreme Base Station. The new version of Apple's flagship wireless access point now supports the draft 802.11n wireless standard for greater range and claimed 5X faster throughput than 802.11g (the device also supports 802.11a/b/g) and it gains the ability to turn any external USB hard drive into network attached storage (NAS), a feature Apple is calling Airport Disk.
