Notes from Canon headquarters
When the invitation comes to join one of the major players in digital imaging on a junket to a land far away, we don't hesitate too long in replying. We've been on a few such trips now, and they're always a good mix of learning and fun. They don't usually take us as far afield as Tokyo, however, which is where we've recently returned after several days at Canon's Shimomaruko-area headquarters as well as the company's Toride factory. Here's our trip notebook.

Corbis submission plug-in for MediaPro released
iView and Corbis have released a plug-in that streamlines the process of submitting photos from MediaPro to the agency. It comes in two parts- one for low-resolution JPEGs and the other for high-resolution TIFFs - and is a free download from the MediaPro website.

Upgrade from MediaPro to Expression Media slated for June 1 release
Starting June 1, licensed users of iView MediaPro 3.0 and later will be able to download and receive a free license key for Microsoft Expression Media 1.0. Expression Media for Windows and Mac is the rebranded follow-on to MediaPro and the first version of the software to ship from Microsoft since the company purchased iView Multimedia in 2006.

Camera Raw 4.1 for Photoshop CS3 announced, soon to be released
Adobe has issued a press release saying that Camera Raw 4.1, an updated version of the RAW file support plug-in for Photoshop CS3 for Windows and Mac, is now available, though the announcement appears to have come ahead of the actual posting of the software on Adobe servers. The new version incorporates additional controls on the sharpening and noise reduction tab, plus it adds support for RAW files from the Canon EOS-1D Mark III, Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro, Nikon D40X, various Phase One backs and more. UPDATE, MAY 29, 2007: A message from Adobe's PR agency today notes "there has been a slight delay posting the Adobe Photoshop Camera Raw 4.1 update to Adobe.com. This problem will be resolved by the end of the week."

World's oldest camera fetches nearly 600,000 Euros at auction
The world's oldest commercially-produced camera, an 1839 Susse Freres wooden box daguerreotype unit, sold at auction in Vienna on May 25th for 588,613 Euros (about US$792,000 at current exchange rates).

YouSendIt, a service for sending large files across the Internet, has released a beta plug-in that enables photos to be uploaded directly from within the Windows versions of Photoshop CS2 and Photoshop CS3. A Mac version of the plug-in is in development.

Canon EOS-1D Mark III to ship today in the USA, tomorrow in Canada
Canon will begin distribution of the EOS-1D Mark III today in the U.S., with the first bodies expected to land on dealer loading docks as early as tomorrow in some U.S. locations, says Chuck Westfall, Director of Media and Customer Relationship at Canon USA. UPDATE: In Canada, the EOS-1D Mark III is expected to ship from the company's facility in Mississauga to dealers starting tomorrow.

Canon releases Digital Photo Professional 3.0.1
Canon this month has released Digital Photo Professional 3.0.1 for Windows and Mac. The only stated change to the program on both platforms is a fix for a processing bug that could lead to poor shadow gradations under certain circumstances, while several features are now disabled when the program is run in Windows Vista.

Canon announces PowerShot S5 IS still and video compact camera
Canon has announced the Powershot S5 IS, the fourth version of its compact digital still and video combo camera. The new model features a 7.99 million image pixel CCD sensor, ISO 80-1600 sensitivity range, DIGIC III image processor, 2.5 inch (diagonal) rear LCD display, 12X image stabilized zoom, a built-in hotshoe compatible with Canon Speedlites, a new continuous autofocus mode plus 640 x 480 pixel at 30 fps movie recording with stereo sound.

Phase One now shipping all models of Plus-series backs
Phase One has announced that all models of their Plus-series digital backs - the P 45+, P 30+, P 21+, P 25+ and P 20+ - are now shipping. First announced last fall, the Plus series promises improved colour, lower noise, the ability to shoot long exposures without a significant degradation in image quality, support for unlimited burst shooting with SanDisk Extreme IV CompactFlash cards (and perhaps other UDMA Mode 4 or higher CompactFlash as well) and other feature improvements.

Software developer Mark Morris has released PhotoUpLink 1.0.1, a plug-in for Apple Aperture that can export photos and metadata to an FTP/SFTP server, a FileMaker or ODBC-compliant database (such as MySQL) or into a Word, Powerpoint or Excel document. It will also bundle selected photos together into a ZIP archive or assemble them as a panorama.
