Bibble 1.0 released; and then there were 4
Eric Hyman has released version 1.0 of Bibble, a Windows-only program for decoding D1 raw format files that includes an image browser, colour management support, a companion Photoshop plug-in and more. What began as a personal project for Hyman has turned into a full-fledged, US$50 (introductory price) shareware application for working with D1 photos. The program is fully-functional for 10 days; after that, only a handful of functions operate until an unlock code is entered. The registration process is a bit clunky at this point: Hyman only accepts cheques for payment.

Part of the fun of being a digital photojournalist is editing and transmitting photos right from the assignment. Shooting Triple AAA baseball in Calgary, I would often tote my Powerbook to the first base shooting position to select and send photos as the game progressed. Choosing the best pics almost always involved editing from memory, because the bright ambient light made it near-impossible to properly assess image content, colour or exposure.

The latest issue of Canadian magazine Photo Life features a breezy comparison between slide film and Nikon D1 digital. The four page article by photographers Jeff Chevrier and Kevin Spreekmeester chronicles their adventures in Ontario's Killarney Park, pitting a pre-release D1 at ISO 200 against an F100 loaded with Fuji Provia 100F.

Version 5.9 of Kodak's acquire software not compatible with G4 Mac FireWire
Kodak's Pat Nugent indicates in an email to camera owners that v5.9 of Kodak's acquire plug-in cannot be used to access a Kodak pro digital camera tethered to a G4 Mac's built-in FireWire ports. There's no word on whether this incompatibility exists with the original G4/350, which shares the FireWire architecture of G3 Macs. Firmware version 3.2, and acquire software v5.9.1, are expected to restore FireWire function.

Photographic Solutions has chosen to renew their distribution agreement with Kodak for Sensor Swab after all. The agreement means the excellent CCD cleaning product will once again ship directly from Photographic Solutions, as well as from their dealers. Version 3.0.14 of Kodak pro digital camera firmware posted
Bob Deutsch notes that Kodak has posted v3.0.14 of the firmware for the Kodak DCS 520, DCS 620 and related pro cameras. Kodak's website indicates that the firmware update fixes a formatting problem with certain Lexar PC Cards; the Read Me document for v3.0.14, however, indicates that it improves compatibility with Calluna PC Cards.

Kodak posts v5.9 acquire software
An updated noise-reduction algorithm is the main change in v5.9 of Kodak's acquire software for Mac and Windows, released yesterday. The included Mac version Read Me notes that v3.0.14 firmware is required to fix an incompatibility with the Powerbook G3/400 and G3/500's built-in FireWire ports; that firmware update has not yet been posted. The Mac version Read Me also indicates that v2.3 of Apple's FireWire support files are required if your desktop Mac has a Kodak-supplied FireWire card installed, though v2.3 is not yet released.
