D1 "silent upgrade" mystery solved
As reported here last month, there is no so-called "silent upgrade" for the Nikon D1 that magically transforms its high ISO performance. But, some D1 cameras may require the replacement of a failing electronic part to rid images of a slight to noticeable diagonal pattern, especially in the green channel of images shot at ISO 1600 and above. Long time D1 owners should take special note of this, as a Nikon USA senior manager indicates that the handful of cameras repaired so far have been primarily those with early serial numbers.

AT&T Wireless, Rogers to move to GSM
The wireless giant appeared to downplay the significance of their big announcement Thursday, choosing instead to play up the deals they've forged with Scandinavian and North American technology companies to move their mobile phone network from TDMA to GSM. The fact remains, however, that AT&T Wireless' decision to adopt the mobile phone standard licensed in over 150 countries worldwide for the next generation of their sprawling US digital network is huge, in part because it's effectively an admission that TDMA didn't have a viable future.

Lexar Media offers free data recovery
One of the key reasons that I typically recommend Flash RAM cards to newspapers going digital is because they're the most durable and reliable type of camera storage media. Flash RAM cards are physically tough, and are therefore better able to withstand the bump and grind of daily news photography. This is perhaps Flash RAM's biggest advantage over somewhat more-fragile miniature hard drive cards.

Photoshop 6 changes IPTC format and more
As early adopters are discovering, a minor change in the way Photoshop 6 for Mac and Windows writes out IPTC text information in the files it saves may wreak havoc for other programs downstream from Photoshop, including the popular image browser Photo Mechanic.
