What started out ten years ago as humble Mac freeware for keeping track of multimedia files has now been acquired by Microsoft. On June 22, 2006, the Redmond, Washington-based software giant inked a deal with iView Multimedia, maker of the popular image cataloger MediaPro, to buy the London-based company and the products it makes.

Nikon tests its software with Intel-based Macs
The technical support sites of Nikon Europe and Nikon USA have posted the results of compatibility tests that the company has conducted with Intel-based Macs and Nikon software. Of special note is the company's statement that Nikon Capture 4.2 and later cannot be installed on Intel-based Macs and that Nikon is "investigating the possibility" of including support for Intel Macs in Capture 4.

Adobe purchases Pixmantec's "technology assets"
Adobe has purchased the "technology assets" of Pixmantec, maker of the Windows-only RAW workflow application RawShooter, and plans to "integrate Pixmantec raw processing technologies into Lightroom(tm) and wherever customers will be working with raw files."

PocketWizard Plus II on its way to dealers in the USA
Lorenzo Gasperini of the MAC Group, the U.S. distributor of LPA Design's PocketWizard line of radio triggering devices, says the Plus II is now on its way to dealers in the U.S. Shipments have been made to all of the bigger pro photo retailers intending to carry the new model, says Gasperini, which should put it on dealer shelves widely as soon as next week.

MonsterPod, the legless, gravity-defying, tripod-like photo accessory first unveiled at the PMA 2006 trade show, is about to ship. In an recent message to the company's mailing list, MonsterPod co-inventor Randel Byrd indicates that production is underway at a plant in China and that shipping is scheduled to begin on June 20, 2006.

Nikon planning trio of fall firmware updates
Nikon is planning firmware updates for three of its digital SLRs that will bring some of the new features of the D2Xs to earlier models. Blue Pixel: overcoming a workflow nightmare
BLUE PIXEL'S blog has an interesting recent entry from the company's own Reed Hoffmann describing how he met several tough workflow challenges at a sports assignment. For the U.S. NCAA Division 2 Tennis Championships, Hoffmann had to shoot 18 matches in a single day, process and correctly caption his images (without the aid of a printed roster and with players who don't wear numbered jerseys), and deliver 15 finished pictures by FTP before the day was done.

The June 2006 issue of The Digital Journalist includes photographs by Peter Turnley from his essay work for Harper's Magazine. Turnley shot most of the Harper's photos with Nikon D2X, D100 and D70 digital SLRs and a small stable of lenses, including the Nikkor 28mm f/1.4 and Nikkor 85mm f/1.4.
