Nikon releases updated NEF codec for Windows Vista
Nikon has released Nikon RAW Codec 1.0.1, an update of the software for Windows Vista that enables the new operating system to process NEFs. The new version corrects a problem in which NEFs tagged in Vista, when the codec is installed, to be rendered incompatible with numerous RAW converters. The installation process has also been streamlined.

Canon announces EOS-1D Mark III
Canon has taken the wraps off their next 1-series digital SLR. The EOS-1D Mark III is a 10.08 million image pixel, 10 fps digital SLR that offers so many improvements over the model it replaces that it's best to describe it as a new-from-the-ground-up camera. Canon has also announced the EF 16-35mm f/2.8L II USM lens, Speedlite 580EX II flash and Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E2/E2A.

Camera Raw 3.7 for Photoshop CS2 now available
Adobe has released Camera Raw 3.7, a free update of the RAW file plug-in for Photoshop CS2. The new version adds support for RAW files from the Nikon D40 and Pentax K10D, plus "unofficial" support for various Phase One backs and the Fujifilm FinePix S5 Pro. Also new in v3.7 is cross-application compatibility between Lightroom 1.0 and Photoshop CS2 RAW processing settings.

Nikon has released updaters for Capture NX that bring the application to v1.1. The Mac version is now a Universal Binary for native performance on both PowerPC- and Intel-based Macs, the Windows version introduces compatibility with 32-bit flavours of Vista and users of both platforms will see numerous functionality tweaks throughout the application.

Lexar to ship 133X 4GB SDHC card, Image Rescue 3 in March
Lexar has announced its first Professional series Secure Digital card designed to adhere to the SDHC specification. The 133X 4GB SDHC card features a Lexar-specified 20MB/second minimum sustained write speed and includes a license for both the upcoming Image Rescue 3 recovery and card maintenance software as well as Corel Paint Shop Pro X. It's slated to ship in March 2007.

Robotic device promises to simplify panorama photography

Virtual Lens Plant section updated at Canon Camera Museum
Canon yesterday updated a section to their Canon Camera Museum website that looks at the technology behind EF-series lenses. Called the Virtual Lens Plant, it includes videos of lens elements being ground and polished, an EF 500mm f/4L IS being assembled, descriptions of Canon lens technologies and interviews with Canon staff involved in lens production.
