Panoramic shows red carpet at 2008 Academy Awards
A 360 degree panoramic captured on the red carpet leading to the Kodak Theatre prior to last Sunday's 2008 Academy Awards in Hollywood, California shows the photographers' tight quarters as they make pictures of eventual best actress winner Marion Cotillard. Shot by the Orange County Register's Eugene Garcia (look for him at work in the photo itself), the QTVR includes ambient sound of the photographers calling out to celebrities as they pass by.

Canon EOS-1D Mark III autofocus analysis article updated
After being pointed to a story on a German website about EOS-1D Mark III autofocus difficulties being experienced by photographers at last month's Australian Open, we followed up with a wire service photographer who covered the event. The photographer confirmed that representatives from Canon's Japan headquarters did come to Melbourne in response to repeated complaints from EOS-1D Mark III shooters on site, and that they did more than just observe. Here's what we've learned.

Apple adds LED backlit option to 17-inch MacBook Pro
Apple today has introduced a revamped 17-inch MacBook Pro that includes an optional LED-backlit display, among other changes. Curiously, LED backlighting is available only by ordering the 1920 x 1200 pixel screen; the standard 1680 x 1050 pixel screen continues to use traditional fluorescent illumination.

Photographer represents himself, wins nearly US$20,000 in copyright infringement case
Minneapolis-based stock photographer Chris Gregerson discovered in 2005 that a local real estate and financial services company had published one of his pictures without permission. This set in motion a legal odyssey that lasted nearly three years and culminated in Gregerson being awarded US$19,462 for the infringement earlier this month. Gregerson has written up a detailed account of his experience representing himself and it's a fascinating read.
