| Panasonic has shown a prototype of the Lumix DMC-L1, a Four Thirds System digital SLR with a distinctly rangefinder-like appearance. It uses the same 7.5 million (effective) pixel NMOS sensor as the recently announced Olympus E-330 and offers live image preview on its LCD (but it differs from the E-330 in several significant ways). In the latter half of 2005, other commitments limited the time we could devote to maintaining and growing an important and popular section of this site. But we're back, with new CompactFlash and Secure Digital cards, new cameras and a viable plan to bring all key sections of the repository of camera media transfer rate information up to date. Today, we've added the Canon EOS 5D and Nikon D200 to the database, plus we've updated the Nikon D2X section. And in the days ahead we'll be adding or updating performance numbers for the Canon EOS-1D Mark II N, EOS-1Ds Mark II and EOS 20D, as well as the Nikon D70s and SD-only Nikon D50. | Prior to Apple's new laptop hitting the streets, we wanted to get a sense of whether - when running Universal Binary versions of an application - the MacBook Pro is going to deliver anything close to the promised 4.5X+ speed increase relative to a Powerbook G4. And whether PowerPC applications pumped through the seamless but speed-robbing Rosetta emulation mode will perform at least as well as they would on a Powerbook G4. But it's too soon to benchmark a MacBook Pro specifically, since they aren't yet shipping. What we do have on hand is a close cousin to the MacBook Pro: an early 2006 iMac with an Intel Core Duo processor.
