| Rode unveils Videomic Pro |

Rode has unveiled the Videomic Pro, a new version of its compact shotgun microphone designed for use with digital SLR and camcorder video capture. It features an improved shock mount system for reduced pickup of camera handling noise, promised improved sound quality, smaller size and - at 85g/3oz - it's less than half the weight of the previous Videomic model.

The Videomic Pro is powered by a 9V battery, has an integrated foam windscreen and a cold shoe with 3/8" thread. Its mono sound is output through a stereo 3.5mm jack for connection to popular digital SLRs and portable field recorders. A three position level control (-10dB, 0, +20dB) is included as well; the +20dB position should enable audio with lower hiss to be recorded when the audio recorder's pre-amps are poor (as they are in most or all video-capable digital SLRs).
Update, January 14, 2010: The Rode Videomic Pro is beginning to pop up on retailer websites. In the U.S., the going rate appears to be in the US$230-US$250 range.
Digital SLR video specialist Philip Bloom has posted sample video that includes audio recorded with a Videomic Pro.
