The U.S. Public Broadcasting System's PBS Arts web series, Off Book, has published an entertaining 7-minute video that traces the rise, fall, and rise once more of the humble animated GIF.
The video includes glimpses of a number of goofy, but very funny, animated GIFs culled from the format's two decade history, many of which inevitably involve cats. But the piece also shows some lovely and sophisticated recent work with the technique, and it includes a short but spirited debate on the proper pronunciation of the GIF acronym.
