The writer Sebastian Junger has formed an organization called
Reporters Instructed in Saving Colleagues, or RISC, to teach conflict photographers and other journalists the basics of combat first aid in three-day seminars. The seminars are offered at no charge; attendees only have to pay for their own travel expenses and food.
Junger started RISC in the wake of the death of his friend, photojournalist Tim Hetherington, whose shrapnel wound in Libya last year was evidently survivable if those around him had known how to treat it.
RISC seminars will be held annually in New York, London, and Lebanon. Interested journalists can register for information on the RISC web site.
The organization is funded by contributions; anyone wishing to donate can do so at the RISC web site, as well.
