Macintouch reports that LaCie is now shipping their line of Pocket Drive FireWire/USB portable drives in 6GB, 12GB and 18GB capacities. The drive, which features connectors for both FireWire and USB, a ruggedized case, small size and a claimed throughput of greater than 11 Mbytes/second (that's almost 3x faster than required for importing of DV-format digital video) via the FireWire port, would seem to be a possible alternative to CD writing as a method for backing up of digital images during extended road trips. VST has announced a similar line of FireWire/USB drives, in 6GB, 12GB, 18GB and 25GB capacities, with even greater claimed throughput (14Mbytes/second).
