The July 16, 2001 issue of Sports Illustrated features yet another Nikon D1X photo in the magazine's Leading Off section. The double-truck swimming picture by photojournalist Lucas Gilman, shot at the US Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs during Rich Clarkson's Sports Photography Workshop last month, is at least the second from the D1X to grace the opening pages of the weekly sports magazine since the camera was released.

Gilman shot the original photo on the D1X's RAW setting, then converted it to a
16-bit TIFF for Sports Illustrated using Nikon Capture 2. It was shot with two strobes:
an Elinchrom Style 600 S with a sapphire blue gel lit the water, while an SB-28DX with
a Full CTO daylight-to-tungsten conversion gel warmed the swimmer from the front.
The D1X was set to Flash WB, Auto Tone Compensation, Normal Sharpening,
ISO 125, a shutter speed of 1/500 and an aperture of f/5.
Gilman, Chief Staff Photographer at the Jackson Hole News in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, was an instructor at the Clarkson workshop this year, after assisting at the workshop in three previous years. He spent most of his time poolside, demonstrating the setup and use of catwalk-mounted Elinchrom, Profoto and Dynalite strobes.
David Bergman's aerial view of the US Open, featured in the June 25, 2001 Sports Illustrated, was also shot with Nikon's latest digital SLR. Both Bergman's and Gilman's photos in the magazine provide a good opportunity to evaluate how D1X files hold up in print.
