Gary Fong notes that Metricom, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection early last month, is set to shut down its 28.8 kbps and 128 kbps wireless Ricochet network, and sell off it and other assets, in an auction on August 16.
The carrier had amassed about 51,000 subscribers, including several US newspaper photo departments, in the 17 markets across the country its wireless Internet network was offered. An AP story indicates that service in those cities will be shut off Wednesday.
