The updater is loaded into the camera via a USB computer connection. Only the Windows version of the update utility has been posted today; a Mac version is to be available "soon." As with certain other Coolpix models, the firmware update may also be uploaded from a CompactFlash card into the camera, opening the way for Mac users to install the update prior to the release of a Mac-specific uploader. Note that updating from a CompactFlash card is NOT supported by Nikon, though I've previously updated a Coolpix 990 through this method without any difficulties.
