The U.S. Public Broadcasting Corporation's NewsHour Online has posted a fascinating video report (with a text transcription) about the Corbis/Bettman Film Preservation Facility. The preservation operation is housed in the Iron Mountain National Underground Storage Facility, an old limestone mine in western Pennsylvania. Corbis has built what will become an enormous film freezer in the mine, and the agency is moving the rapidly deteriorating 11-million image Bettman Archive, unquestionably the world's most important photo repository, from its former home in an old building in downtown Manhattan to the new facility.
