| U.S. gov't agency finds variability in CD and DVD archival qualities |

The U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology has recently released a preliminary study on the archival characteristics of CD and DVD optical recording media.
A short summary of their conclusions is that properly handled high-quality optical media is indeed archivally stable over decades, but there may be wide quality variability in commercially available disks, and it's difficult to distinguish the best from the rest.
