A brief article on the Sony-manufactured CMOS image sensor that's at the heart of the upcoming Nikon D2X is in the January 2005 issue of Nikkei Electronics Asia.
The article specifically addresses the engineering challenge of keeping noise at bay in a sensor with a small pixel pitch:
"...there is an excellent chance that the new CMOS sensor will deliver top-class sensitivity (signal/noise ratio, or S/N) in comparison with other sensors of the same pixel area. Pixel pitch, a key indicator of S/N, is 5.49µm..."
