Nikon has announced a recall of a number of the batteries used to power the D50, D70 and D100 cameras. The affected packs can overheat and possibly melt, says a statement from the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission.
A total of about 710,000 EN-EL3 rechargeable battery packs - about 200,000 in the USA alone - are to be replaced free of charge by the company in the U.S, and presumably other Nikon marketing regions also. More information on the recall is on various Nikon web sites worldwide, including Nikon USA.
