Some cards induce a delay in the time it takes for a Nikon D1-series camera to wake and fire after a period of inactivity. Of the cameras in this database, only the D1, D1X and D1H are affected.
Wake-From-Sleep Delay
A PocketWizard MultiMax was used to measure whether a given card would appreciably extend the Nikon D1H's own wake-from-sleep time of about 420 milliseconds (ms). Where the wake-from-sleep delay is reported as none in the table, the card did not extend the wake-from-sleep time by more than 50ms. For cards that tripped over the 50ms mark, the additional delay, over and above 420ms, is reported. Expect similar wake-from-sleep delay results with the D1 and D1X.

(1) To help determine whether the card you purchase is substantially similar to the one tested, the card's description includes an identifier - series number, internal name or other unique value - where possible and applicable. See How can I be sure the card I buy is the same as the one tested in this report? for information on interpreting the card identifier. With CompactFlash cards from companies that source components from other manufacturers, it's particularly important to compare the identifier noted here with the card you might select. (2) Many companies sell CompactFlash media; relatively few actually design and manufacture the key internal components, including the controller and flash memory. This column lists the manufacturer of the controller. (3) Type I CompactFlash cards are 3.3mm in thickness; Type II, 5.0mm. (4) K/sec = Kilobytes per second (1 kilobyte = 1024 bytes). (5) Companies that source CompactFlash cards from Toshiba may opt for either the faster single level cell (SLC) or slower (but less expensive to manufacture) multi level cell (MLC) arhictecture. The Kingston cards tested were MLC; the company does, however, offer SLC-based CompactFlash cards on special order. Kingston's SLC-based cards have "-S" appended to the end of their part number, ie CF/512-S. Not all of Kingston's distributors will have the SLC cards listed among the products they can ship to dealers. For more information, contact Kingston. (6) Delkin has not revealed the design and manufacturing partner for their Pro line of CompactFlash cards. (7) Pretec has not disclosed the source of the controller in the Pretec 512MB card tested. (8) These cards contain controllers from an unknown manufacturer, likely of Taiwanese origin. |
Identifying the Firmware in a Lexar 256MB 12X Compactflash Card
Some Lexar Media 256MB 12X CompactFlash cards, those that are part of the High-Speed Series the company introduced in the fall of 2001, contain a firmware revision that causes a 425ms wake-from-sleep delay with Nikon D1-series cameras. But not all units are affected; at a certain point in this card's production cycle, Lexar switched to a firmware version that exhibits no delay.
Determining whether a yellow/black label 256MB 12X card is affected is simple, as long as you're able to view the serial number on the card's trailing edge. If the first two digits are 37 or higher (as shown below), the card is fitted with the newer, delay-free firmware.
Look to the serial number of the trailing edge. If the first two digits are 37 or higher, the card contains a firmware version that does not trigger a wake-from-sleep delay with Nikon D1-series cameras.
Conversely, if the first two digits are 36 or lower, the card will require a firmware update if you want the delay gone. Though most High-Speed Series Lexar Media cards are not eligible for firmware updating (only Lexar's Pro Series cards include free updates), Lexar's Jim Gustke indicates that the company will make an exception for this specific card. Therefore, if you own a Lexar Media 256MB 12X High-Speed Series CompactFlash card, one with a yellow/black label, and you've determined that it requires firmware updating, contact Lexar tech support at +1 510-413-1275.
Most older Pro Series Lexar cards, including the discontinued Pro Series 256MB 12X (marked Pro Series on the card's front label), as well as the 160MB 10X used in this database as the standard reference card, remain eligible for free firmware updating as of this writing.
Lexar's 16X, 24X and later Pro Series cards do not exhibit a wake-from-sleep delay, and therefore do not require a firmware update.
