The latest revision of the US$145 image browser FotoStation 4, Build 85, is now available for Mac and Windows. It includes the following changes:
A read-only mode for viewing images on removable media, including the CompactFlash format cards used in the NikonD1.
Speedy viewing of the low-quality thumbnail inside D1 files, when viewing those files on a CompactFlash card. FotoStation will still build a better quality thumbnail when browsing folders on a computer.
Display of the ISO in D1 files in the Info window.
Tagging/untagging of images in a manner similar to the tag function in Photo Mechanic, though Photo Mechanic makes it easier to tag and untag a group of files in which some may already be tagged.
Additional web page templates and backgrounds.
Four different flavours of D1 noise filtering in the Edit mode. Type 3 is pretty good, though not quite up to the filtering oomph of Qimage Pro. Fotoware promises that the D1 filtering will continue to improve in upcoming revisions.
One bug persists in Build 85, at least in the Mac version: The orientation of previews does not always match that of rotated thumbnails. Registered users can upgrade to the new version free of charge by downloading it from the FotoStation website. A 15 day trial version is also available.
