Wednesday, February 18, 2009 | by Rob Galbraith
The PowerShot SX1 IS is coming to the U.S. and Canada in April. The Canon compact digital still camera was announced last fall in other parts of the world, and can record 1920 x 1080 pixel video at 30fps, the first PowerShot model to offer 1080p HD recording. It does so with the first Canon-developed CMOS image sensor in a compact camera, one that captures 9.98 million image pixel still photos at up to 4fps.

The SX1 IS also includes a 28-560mm (equivalent) 20X image stabilized zoom, 2.8 inch (diagonal), 16:9 aspect ratio rear LCD, built-in stereo mics, DIGIC 4 processor, SD card slot, MPEG4 video files, A/V and HDMI video out.

Canon has separately announced that a firmware update, expected mid-March 2009, will bring RAW format capture to this camera. A companion update to Canon's Digital Photo Professional software will enables its RAW files to be processed.
