Firmware update for Apple 24-inch display addresses flickering, blackouts with Thunderbolt Macs
Thursday, September 29, 2011 | by Rob Galbraith
Apple has issued a firmware update for the Apple LED Cinema Display 24-inch that's meant to eliminates intermittent screen flickering and/or blackouts when this display is connected to a Thunderbolt-equipped Mac. This problem has plagued several machines here, starting with the iMac 21.5-inch back in May and, more recently, the MacBook Air 11-inch.

The solution also seems to be working: no flickering and no blackouts since loading the new display firmware late yesterday (during which time we'd normally have been treated to multiple instances of both).

Ready: Firmware updater for the Apple LED Cinema Display 24-inch

The firmware update is exclusively for the Apple LED Cinema Display 24-inch, and is only targeted at owners of 2011-vintage Macs with Thunderbolt ports.

As of this writing, Apple has not yet made the firmware update available via Software Update or linked to it on the company's support web pages. This might suggest that it's not ready for general distribution for one reason or another. If you'd like to proceed with the installation anyway, the update is available as a direct download from one of Apple's support servers here. More information on the updater is here.

Update, September 29, 2011, 8:00PM MT: The firmware updater is no longer available via the link in the previous paragraph, presumably because Apple has pulled it from the web.

The Apple LED Cinema Display 24-inch was introduced in 2008 and discontinued last year.
