Nikon Inc. (U.S.A.) will begin shipping D70 camera bodies and kits "in significant quantities" to U.S. dealers on March 18th, says Steve Heiner, General Manager of Digital SLR Systems for the company. Dealers in Canada will have D70 kits (the camera body plus the DX Nikkor 18-70mm f/3.5-4.5G lens) by the end of the month, according to Sig Hallgrimsson, Product Coordinator for Nikon Canada Inc.
In the U.S. there will not be enough D70 units to fill all current orders, Heiner says, and he was reluctant to estimate how long it might take to eliminate backorders for the camera. But he did say that additional shipments from the factory will be "frequent and sizeable". The D70's estimated street price in the U.S. is US$999 for the body only and US$1299 for the body/lens kit, which, as in Canada, includes the DX Nikkor 18-70mm lens.
Nikon Canada initially will be delivering kits only, and the company cannot yet confirm a ship date for D70 bodies only, according to Hallgrimsson. Manufacturer's suggested list price for the kit in Canada is CDN$1899.
