Update for RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer now available
Saturday, December 17, 2005 | by Rob Galbraith

Microsoft yesterday released the latest version of the RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP. The combination of shell extension and viewing application adds support for the display of a range of Canon and Nikon digital SLR RAW files to the operating system. Changes in v1.0 Build 50 include:

  • Support for the latest cameras from Canon and Nikon, including the Canon EOS 5D and EOS-1D Mark II N, as well as the Nikon D50, D70s, D2Hs and D200. D200 support includes the display of thumbnails and previews only; viewing in the highest quality mode is not yet possible.

  • A new 'Save As...' button on the Toolbar that enables the saving of the current image as either a JPEG or TIFF file.

  • Quicker performance when displaying previews from certain Nikon cameras, including the D70, D70s, and D50.

  • Reduced memory usage when generating NEF thumbnails for most Nikon digital SLR models.

  •  During installation, 'TIFF' is no longer selected by default as one of the image types the RAW Viewer opens when you double-click the image in Windows Explorer.

  • Fixes for several known problems in earlier versions of the software, including one that could cause certain files to become locked, preventing them from being moved or deleted in Windows Explorer.

Version 1.0 Build 50 (the version previously announced as v1.1) of the RAW Image Thumbnailer and Viewer for Windows XP is a free download from Microsoft. Note that as of this writing, the new release doesn't appear to have completely propagated across the company's network of download servers; the copy we downloaded from the v1.0 Build 50 download page turned out to be an earlier release from June 2005. This a problem we've experienced before with Microsoft's web site, one that seems to cure itself in a day or so (refreshing the browser page doesn't appear to have any effect).
