Wednesday, June 6, 2012 | by Eamon Hickey
Sony has announced the Cyber-shot DSC-RX100, an ultra-compact 19.96 million image pixel camera with a fixed (i.e. non-interchangeable) zoom lens and a large sensor (13.2 x 8.8 mm) similar in size to the so-called 1" sensor in the Nikon 1-series cameras.

The lens is a 10.4-37.1mm f/1.8-4.9 zoom (equivalent to 28-100mm on 35mm format); the camera can shoot 1080p 60fps video; it can capture images in raw format; and the maximum ISO is 25,600, among many other notable features. It will become available in the U.S. in July and will sell for about US$650 in the U.S., according to a Sony press release.

Extensive write-ups on the announcement are available at Imaging Resource and Digital Photography Review.
