Nikon posts Coolpix 5000 firmware update
Friday, December 21, 2001 | by
Firmware version 1.6 for the Nikon Coolpix 5000, a user-installable firmware update that corrects a bug that can render the camera inoperable, has been posted on the Nikon USA software download page.

The updater is loaded into the camera via a USB computer connection. Only the Windows version of the update utility has been posted today; a Mac version is to be available "soon." As with certain other Coolpix models, the firmware update may also be uploaded from a CompactFlash card into the camera, opening the way for Mac users to install the update prior to the release of a Mac-specific uploader. Note that updating from a CompactFlash card is NOT supported by Nikon, though I've previously updated a Coolpix 990 through this method without any difficulties.

The v1.6 updater, Windows-only upload utility and instructions may be downloaded from the Nikon USA software site.
