PDN: Crowd-funded essay project among POYi winners
Tuesday, February 21, 2012 | by Eamon Hickey
PDN Pulse has an interesting article on Tomas Van Houtryve's photo essay project on 21st century communism, called "Behind the Curtains", which just won this year's POYi World Understanding Award.

Van Houtryve, a multiple award winning photojournalist and member of the VII photo agency, had been working on his project for more than five years but could not get magazines or other media sources to fund any further work on it. So he turned to the crowd-funding web site,, to get enough money to finish the project.

Unable to get a magazine assignment to complete a current project on North Korea, despite the death of the country's leader, Kim Jong Il, becoming a major recent news event, Van Houtryve is again turning to for crowd-sourced funding of his work.
