Microtech today announced the FireWire CameraMate, a US$129 (list price) CompactFlash card reader that, says a Microtech press release, is the "Fastest Digital Card Reader In the World."

The reader will support Type I and II Compactflash, including IBM's Microdrive, boasts a data transfer rate of up to 5MB/second (real world transfer rates are usually slower than any manufacturer's specs), and draws its power from the FireWire bus or an optional external power supply. The case design is similar to Microtech's USB CameraMate.
The reader is developed by SCM Micro, the new owner of Microtech and long-time maker of Microtech card reader products. It is expected to ship early in the first quarter of 2001. The FireWire CameraMate will be on display at Comdex in Las Vegas this week, in Kodak Partner Pavilion booth KPP-10.
Microtech also announced the USB CameraMate MS, a dual slot CompactFlash/Sony Memory Stick card reader. It is expected to ship late this year at a list price of US$89.
