Paul C. Buff now accepting Vagabond Mini Lithium pre-orders
Wednesday, September 15, 2010 | by Rob Galbraith
Slated for release in the second half of November, the US$239.95 Vagabond Mini Lithium portable power pack for studio strobes can now be pre-ordered from Paul C. Buff.

The 3.5lb/1.6kg unit features a pure sine wave inverter, user-removable Lithium battery, twin AC sockets and three-stage battery gauge in a compact rectangular case that enables it to be fixed to a lightstand with the included clamp. Paul C. Buff has rated the Vagabond Mini Lithium at over 500 full power pops from a single charge in testing with an AlienBees B1600 monolight set to 640ws. A 5V/500mAh USB A port on the front of the unit allows for iPhones and similar devices to be powered or charged too.

The Vagabond Mini Lithium, including the inverter, battery module and three-hour charger, is US$239.95 when pre-ordered from Paul C. Buff in the U.S. Additional batteries are US$89.95.

Company founder Paul Buff says the company will be selling additional accessories intended to complement the use of the Vagabond Mini Lithium. They include:
  • A high-intensity but low wattage modeling lamp for the Einstein 640. The Einstein's standard modeling lamp will drain the Vagabond Mini Lithium's battery rapidly and is too high a wattage to be run at more than about half power. Swapping in the accessory modeling lamp will make its use more practical with this or most other portable power packs, though it will still be necessary to turn the lamp on only when needed or risk running down the battery before the shoot is over.

  • A three-foot power cord. For photographers who intend to clamp the Vagabond Mini Lithium to a lightstand, within a fairly short reach of the monolight on top, and don't want a long power cord dangling down.
A date for the availability of these accessories has not been set.
