Canon and Olympus announce new digital cameras

Canon has announced the 10MP Powershot G12, the new flagship in its compact camera line that adds in-camera high dynamic range (HDR) imaging, 720p video and Hybrid IS image stabilization to the G11 it replaces, as well as the SX30 IS, a 14.1MP model with the equivalent of a 24-840mm f/2.7-5.8 zoom lens. The new Olympus E-5 digital SLR replaces the E-3 atop the company's digital SLR lineup and features a 12.3MP sensor, 5fps burst rate, 720p/30fps video capture, promised improved image quality and a 3.0-inch (diagonal), 920,000-dot variable-angle rear LCD.

The PowerShot G12 is slated to ship in early October at an estimated street price of US$499.99 in the U.S. The PowerShot SX30 IS is to ship late this month at an estimated street price of US$429.99 in the U.S.

The Olympus E-5 is to come available in October at an estimated street price of US$1699.99 in the U.S.
