Photojournalist comments on early experiences with crowd-sourced project funding
Thursday, April 7, 2011 | by Eamon Hickey
The blog A Photo Editor has posted some brief comments by photojournalist Thomas Van Houtryve about his experience using the new crowd-funding web site, which tries to aggregate large numbers of small contributions to fund worthy documentary photo and visual journalism projects.

Van Houtryve has traveled to Laos to work on a project titled "21st Century Communism". In his comments, he notes the dramatic difference between his previous experience of photojournalism as a "lone-wolf" existence compared to this project, on which he has more than 100 backers who serve as a kind of support team for his work.

When his comments on A Photo Editor were published, Van Houtryve's project was still only partially funded, but it has since gathered US$10,000 from 134 supporters, slightly exceeding the original funding target of US$8,800.
