Thursday, June 9, 2011 | by Rob Galbraith
Finnish developer SoftColor has released Automata 1.0, a photo processing utility for Windows that can perform a fairly extensive list of automated adjustments to photos. The program watches a folder or folders for incoming files, then applies a series of processing steps that can include resizing, cropping, rotating, straightening, sharpening, noise reduction, colour and tone corrections (both manually-specified and automatic based on the photo's content) and colour space conversions.

Input file formats include JPEG, TIFF, most camera RAW formats and PSD; the program can output to a similar list of formats, include a PSD comprised of the original and processed photo on two separate layers.

SoftColor Automata 1.0 - Smart and Agile Image Editing Workflow Automation

JOENSUU, Finland (June 09, 2011) - SoftColor Oy today announced the immediate availability of Automata 1.0: a workflow automation software for advanced color correction, image editing and color management. Automata works independently on the background and can work with multiple simultaneously workflows.

"We wanted to develop a hassle-free image editing workflow automation software,” said Petri Piirainen Co-Founder of SoftColor Oy. “Today Automata makes it simple and easy for anyone to get daily image editing tasks done."

Automata can have unlimited number of different workflows and it has support for file logistics operations. It loads automatically new and changed image files from the input folder and after processing it saves images to the output folder.

Automata has a lightweight single window graphical user interface. Automata uses nondestructive layer based processing for color and image adjustments. This gives to the end-user a full control to tune automatic correction adjustments.

The core of Automata's workflow automation is SoftColor’s in-house developed spectral illumination detection algorithms which makes it possible to teach the computer to think about colors like a human being. For the end-user this gives an automatic and fully customizable solution to fix white balance, exposure and contrast problems.

Automata can use third-party applications or shell scripts for pre or post processing images inside its workflows.

Automata has support for standard ICC profile based color management. Automata can convert and render between different color spaces, for example conversion from RGB to CMYK.

Automata reads multiple digital image and camera RAW-formats. It saves edited image to JPEG, TIFF, PNG, BMP and PSD formats. If PSD format is used are original and edited images saved into same file as separate layers.
