Eye-Fi officially releases Direct Mode firmware update (updated)
Tuesday, April 19, 2011 | by Rob Galbraith
Eye-Fi has now officially made available the Direct Mode firmware update for its X2-series wireless/memory SDHC cards. While it has been possible since the weekend to install the new firmware, to do so required the use of a backdoor method. Now, when you insert an Eye-Fi X2 card into a reader and launch Eye-Fi Center, the software should automatically prompt you to install v4.5022.

Note that v4.5022 is a slightly later revision of the firmware than the v4.5021 that was out a few days ago. We don't know whether the change in the version number hints at a significant change in the newer version, or if there is any change at all besides the numbering. The two cards we'd already updated to v4.5021 don't trigger the automatic firmware update notice to appear in Eye-Fi Center, while a third - running 4.2172 - does.

Update, April 19, 2011, 12:00PM MT: There is effectively no difference between firmware v4.5021 and v4.5022, says Eye-Fi's Ziv Gillat. If you've updated to firmware v4.5021 already, he says, there's no need to now update to v4.5022.

Eye-Fi has posted a brief Direct Mode FAQ as well.
