When a photograph makes a difference
Wednesday, January 31, 2007 | by Mike Sturk
Photo District News story tells how a photograph by TIME photojournalist Yuri Kozyrev had an impact on a young girl's life. His photo showed seven-year-old Insha Afsar, who lost her leg when her school collapsed after the powerful 2005 earthquake in Kashmir, hobbling on crutches across a rocky landscape in early 2006. Kozyrdev had been documenting the aftermath of the catastrophe that killed 75,000 people and left three million homeless in the region. The photo, published in April 2006, prompted Shriner Marty Morrow, along with TIME, to assist the little girl in obtaining a prosthetic limb in the U.S.
