ThinkPad W700ds now available for ordering from Lenovo website
Tuesday, January 6, 2009 | by Rob Galbraith
The ThinkPad W700ds, a dual-screen version of Lenovo's performance laptop that was officially announced yesterday (and which we previewed earlier this month), is now available for ordering on the Lenovo website. The secondary 10.6 inch, 768 x 1280 pixel screen adds US$420 to the price of the machine.

Wes Williams, Worldwide ThinkPad Product Marketing Manager, indicates that the revised CompactFlash slot and smoother Wacom tablet surface are included in any W700 and W700ds units ordered now with these options. In an informal test by Williams of the new CompactFlash slot's throughput, with a card that supports the faster UDMA data timing mode necessary for maximum transfer speed, he saw a result of 27.4MB/s. This puts it on roughly same performance footing as any of the better UDMA-capable USB 2.0 card readers available today.

As of this writing, shipping time for the W700ds is estimated to be "more than 4 weeks" on the Lenovo website. The 8GB RAM, 2.26GHz Intel Core 2 Quad (QX9100) processor and 4GB Intel Turbo Memory options haven't yet appeared on the W700 and W700ds order pages.

More information on the ThinkPad W700ds is in a January 2, 2009 article.
