A first look at the Canon EOS-1D Mark III - Continued
eos-1d_mark_III_vball_01_midres.jpg
Spotlight: Canon EOS-1D Mark III at ISO 100, post-processing with Craig's Actions (Photo by Rob Galbraith/Little Guy Media)

Full resolution photos

Links next to the thumbnails below are to full resolution files shot with a preproduction Canon EOS-1D Mark III, as well as the EOS-1D Mark II N and Nikon D2Xs (for comparison purposes). All photos are in the Adobe RGB colour space and include an embedded ICC profile. To get a proper look at the photos, download and open them in Photoshop or another image viewer that enables you to magnify them fully and that will display the shooting data in the IPTC Caption field. While some of the thumbnails are cropped, unless otherwise marked the downloadable files are uncropped.

To download, right-click on the link and select your browser's option for saving the photo to your hard drive. If you view them in your browser, and you're on Windows, they'll look flat, since no Windows browser can properly display photos with embedded ICC profiles. UPDATE, JUNE 13, 2007: the web browser Safari 3 for Windows, just released as a public beta, does colour manage the display of photos with embedded profiles.

All of these photos are for personal viewing and printing only. They may not be republished in any form without the permission of the copyright holder; this includes the posting of photos downloaded from this page onto another server. If you would like to use any of the photos here for any reason, please contact us directly.

Things to note:
  • Several of the photos are available as both camera JPEGs and their counterpart RAW version, processed for inclusion here in Digital Photo Professional mostly. Downloading both will enable you to compare the two, and the conversions are often noticeably different.

  • Most of the photos are posted in their original form, as they emerged from the camera or from the RAW converter. In some instances, we've added a hue adjustment, to counteract Digital Photo Professional's uneven skin tone rendering. The notes next to the thumbnails indicate which ones have had this adjustment. Also note that the hue adjustment we've done has been designed to help, not cure a problem. The cure is to use another RAW converter when the best possible colour is required, but only Canon software so far can do conversions from EOS-1D Mark III CR2s.

  • Many of the photos are available unsharpened, and in an alternate version that has been treated with Noise Ninja to reduce noise and then sharpened with Smart Sharpen to counteract the softness introduced by the camera's low-pass optical filter. We don't deliver files to paying customers without doing these steps, we don't try to evaluate image quality without seeing how files respond to noise reduction and sharpening and we don't think you can get a bead on EOS-1D Mark III image quality without including this most basic of post-capture or post-conversion processing. So, if you have to download just one version, pick the one that's been touched by Noise Ninja and Smart Sharpen, then take it through your regular workflow and see how the file holds up.
See the first page of this article for more on image quality.

Understanding the filename

The filename, and shooting data in the Caption field, together provide information that's important to the understanding of how the photo was taken and processed. The shooting data is self-explanatory; the filename is explained below.

Notes: To minimize the impact of strobe blur on this sometimes-moving subject, a shutter speed of 1/400 was used. With moderate flash duration strobes like the Elinchrom Style 600 S that lit this photo, the blurring "tail" of the light is clipped, which in turn helps image sharpness (and the DPP_NNSS version shows exceptional crispness). But, a shutter speed of 1/400 means that the extreme right side of the frame has the tell-tale thin dark band of a photo shot a sync speed that's one notch too high. Please be aware of that when you're looking at the shadow side of the face in any of the downloadable versions.

(Please see the article text on the main page for more about EOS-1D Mark III flash sync speed.)
